If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.—J.R.R. Tolkein
I am a writer and editor based in Denver, Colo. I am also a wife to a hottie of a husband and mom to two pretty great kids. In many years as a magazine staffer and freelancer, I have written about topics ranging from powder skiing in Japan to new sports bras to yoga for cancer patients. I’ve also reported and written a lot about natural health, fitness, parenting, and my real passion: food. For me, being a food evangelist is more than promoting local, sustainable, and organic food — although those are important parts of it. But beyond all that, I believe that a delicious and healthy meal is something we all should be having a lot more often. Good food brings families together, it makes us slow down and appreciate what we have, it models good eating habits for our kids, it can make every day to be a little more special, and, well, there are so many reasons, I guess I will have to blog about them!
Now, I better tell you what I am not: I am not a licensed chef or a nutritionist, or even a true foodie (I’m not that refined; I have to feed two kids after all). I have taken many cooking classes, I’ve been a caterer, and have gotten lots of on-the-job training in my own kitchen. I devour cookbooks like they’re People Magazine, but I rarely follow recipes. I’m still learning, but I want to share some of my repeatable successes and the tips and information I’ve gleaned over all these years as a food fanatic and working reporter. I love and appreciate any and all comments, questions, suggestions, and criticism. Thanks for reading.

Hi Bevin,
This is Brooke, Jeff Williams’ wife….Jeff gave me a link to your blog because I’m very interested in food and nutrition, as well. Can I tell you how much I enjoy reading your blog? It’s fantastic. It’s informal. It’s unpretentious. You communicate recipes and food ideas and food preparation tips in a fashion that real people can work with!
For example, you write about rinsing spinach really well to get the sand and grime out. My experience is that chefs/cooks/food personalities operated based on an assumption that their audience have a very good understanding of food preparation. And maybe their audiences do.
But I, for example, often turn away from a recipe when there are several aspects of it (food ingredients, food appliances/tools, food prep processes) that I’m unfamiliar with.
You are providing meal and other food ideas which I could really work with. And I love that most of the foods you write about are local. I very much appreciated your post about the weekly organic box. (We did this in CA, but I haven’t signed up here yet, as I called CSA and it sounded like their box was too small. Your box, though not from CSA, was ample!). I loved the inclusion of food quality and products from Iceland. (Very interesting). I appreciated your honest thoughts about weight.
It’s just a really wonderful, enjoyable, informative blog! Thank you for it! Please keep up the good work!
P.S. I’m not a food blog person at all, but since learning that I am gluten-intolerant, I did discover glutenfreegirl.com a while ago. I followed the blog almost since its inception.
Unfortunately, the blogger has recently become so popular, she is trying to get a tv show, etc. Her site now seems so much more big business/promotional vs the downhome site I used to love and enjoy. (Please keep yours real and simple!).
Take good care,
Brooke Williams
Hi Brooke:
Thanks so much for your kind words and especially for reading my blog! I am familiar with Gluten Free Girl (we did a gluten challenge with my daughter about a year ago; turns out she is actually lactose intolerant instead!) and I really love her tone and site. I am hoping to migrate my blog from a wordpress site to my own, so I will keep you posted!
I hope you guys are having a nice summer and are enjoying Colorado!
Bevin
Hello Bevin,
I was talking with a mutual friend of ours, Michael Miracle, and he suggested I reach out to you as he thought we have many synergies. After reading through your blog – I have to agree with him (down to the 9 year old son.)
I’d love to talk with you further.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Cheers,
Becky
Hello, Bevin! I caught sight of you as I was leaving a birthday message for Mandy on FB, and remembered celebrating her “first annual 39th birthday” with you (& many others) at that Mexican place downtown. Weren’t you pregnant then? I hope all is well with you… love the gorgeous blog!
Would love to catch up sometime… maybe there is something we can do together on the new SocialMoms site I write for!
Best,
Lea
Hi Lea! Thanks for getting in touch, so great to hear from you! Yes, I think I was pregnant at Mady’s 39th — I have an almost 7-year-old now! How are you? Tell me more about what you’ve been up to!
